ME NOT ME
One Year's Dreams in 32 Meters
Like my previous work En voir de toutes les couleurs, this work is also based on my sleep data recorded in 2023, which I used to determine the number and duration of my REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep phases, i.e. the dream phases, over the course of a year.
Here, each crocheted stitch corresponds to one minute of dream. The minutes of a single dream phase are crocheted together and the direction is changed after each phase, thus resulting in the partly linear, partly planar (or in other words: partly one-dimensional, partly two-dimensional) nature of the work.
After every 100 crocheted dreams, I added a mark with a red sewing thread, which in turn determines the hanging of the over 30 metres long work: At each mark there is a 180 degree change of direction.
The title alludes to me as a dreamer: It's me, and yet it's not me. It is my thoughts and images that come up in my dreams, and yet they are not mine. I can neither direct nor control them. This mixture of me, and yet not me, makes every single dream a universe of its own.
